Artistic Process, 2018

Book Cutout Collage

This Zine is my exploration between realism and abstraction. What is more realistic; an image a machine takes of the stars? A chart with facts and figures? Or a Portrait? The struggle between realism and abstraction represents the struggle between an idea and an end result. Images of Charles Csuri’s Hummingbird animation are embroidered on top of the collaged images.

Friend or Foe, 2018

Thread on watercolor paper
23″ X 16.5″

Friend or Foe is an exploration of our atmosphere and relationship to the Sun. I find I have always attached positive emotional responses to the Earth and the Sun. The Earth is associated with trees, grassy lawns, and beaches. The Sun associated with shorts, suntans, and late summer evenings. Beyond those superficial reasons we need both to survive. As we slowly experience the self inflicted results of global warming and the previous damage done to the ozone the Earth and Sun take on a new uncaring and impartial persona. Friend or Foe can also be seen as the Earth’s natural response to humans based on how we treat our planet.

Homage to Failure, 2018

Past art work and wire
20″ X 17″ X 16″

Homage to Failure is a shrine built in honor of all my past failings. It is all my past artwork that I have kept collaged into a sphinx like creature. The Sphinx was a story about a creature with a head of a woman, body of a lion, and wings of an eagle that went around asking everyone the same riddle. Many people failed to answer and only person succeeded. It represents the overpowering importance of the discarded journey.
Failure rules most peoples lives and decisions. People are often motivated by fear of failure, avoidance of past failures, or learning experiences cause by failures. If you think about how often people hope/pray to avoid failure, it seems to be a god just based on it’s reputation and relevance. One that people fear and definitely do not respect. I am at a point in my life where I am trying to view Failure as an adventure and not something to be ashamed of. Life is literally a journey that involves more failures than successes. If I continue to fear and be ashamed of failure the result will be being scared and embarrassed about the majority of life.

Flower a Day, A Two Year Metaphor 2016-2018

45″ X 62″

Flower a Day is constructed by crocheting one flower for everyday for two years. It is supposed to be a practice in mindfulness and a way to battle the race of time. The colors represent different emotions; the closer to blue the more at peace and content I am, the closer to red the more uncomfortable and unbalanced I feel. I repeat colors when I miss a series of days to show the weeks I was not paying attention as well as I could.
